Schiphol began as a military airfield before developing into a civilian airport after the First World War. Its early growth was tied to Amsterdam’s expanding commercial and aviation needs, and it gradually became the main airport for the Dutch capital.
During the postwar period, the airport expanded substantially as international air travel increased. Additional terminal capacity, airside infrastructure, and runway facilities were added over time to support larger aircraft and higher traffic levels.
A major turning point was the consolidation of Schiphol into a single connected terminal concept, which helped the airport manage transfer traffic more efficiently. This structure became central to its role as a hub airport and supported the growth of KLM and its alliance partners.
Further modernization has focused on handling large international flows, improving passenger processing, and adapting the airfield for long-haul and high-frequency operations. The airport today reflects decades of expansion from a local airfield into a major European gateway.
