Airlines and Destinations Overview

Bogotá El Dorado is the main air gateway for Colombia and a major connecting point for domestic and international traffic. Its route network supports both point-to-point demand in the capital and onward connections across the country and to destinations in the Americas and beyond.

The airport is led by Avianca in terms of traffic and operates as a major hub with a mix of short-haul domestic services, regional international flights, and longer-haul links. This combination gives it a balanced role in the national network, with significant transfer traffic alongside local origin-and-destination demand.

Terminal Buildings and Facilities

The passenger terminal complex is organized to handle both domestic and international services within a single large airport system. Operations are arranged to separate different flows of passengers and aircraft movements while supporting high daily throughput.

The airport has evolved into a multi-function commercial hub with a broad range of passenger services, transfer facilities, and airside amenities. The overall layout is designed for a major hub airport handling both local departures and connecting itineraries.

Key characteristics of the terminal system include:

  • Combined domestic and international handling
  • Large-scale hub operations
  • Separate passenger processing flows
  • Transfer-oriented terminal functions

Passenger-facing facilities are distributed across the terminal area and include the standard services expected at a major international airport. These typically support check-in, security screening, arrivals processing, and landside passenger needs.

Passenger facilities available across the airport include:

  • Check-in areas
  • Security checkpoints
  • Immigration and customs processing
  • Retail and service counters

Notable lounges include:

  • Avianca Sala VIP
  • Wingo VIP Lounge
  • Sala VIP LATAM

Dining and Food Options

Food and beverage options at the airport include a mix of quick-service counters, casual dining, and familiar chain concepts serving both domestic and connecting passengers. The offering is designed to support short connection times as well as longer waits in the terminal.

Public Transport and Parking

The airport is connected to Bogotá by road and is served by public bus options, taxis, and app-based ride services. Ground access is important because the airport functions as the principal air gateway for the city and its metropolitan area. Official airport transport and parking information is available on the airport's ground transport page.

The airport's location within the city’s northern-western airfield corridor gives it direct access to the urban road network and makes it a practical gateway for passengers traveling to and from the capital. Road conditions and journey times can vary with city traffic, so travelers generally plan extra time for peak periods.

Passengers can reach the airport using:

  • Public bus
  • Taxi
  • Ride-hailing services
  • Private car
  • Airport shuttle services

Parking is available for short-stay and longer-stay use, supporting both departing passengers and airport visitors. As at most major airports, parking products are typically structured around different trip lengths and user needs.

Parking options include:

  • Short-stay parking
  • Long-stay parking
  • Public parking areas
  • Drop-off and pick-up zones

Runways and Operations

The airport operates a multi-runway airfield with a long main runway capable of supporting widebody operations and high-volume traffic. Its airfield layout is designed for intensive commercial use and accommodates a broad range of domestic and international aircraft types.

Operationally, the airport handles a large number of daily movements and serves as one of the region’s key airline hubs. The long runway and major hub status support regular operation by narrowbody and widebody aircraft, including services with longer stage lengths.

The runway system includes:

  • Multiple runways
  • A main runway measuring 3,809 m
  • Capacity for widebody operations
  • Support for domestic and international traffic

Passenger Traffic and Airport Role

Bogotá El Dorado is Colombia’s primary airport by traffic and the country’s most important hub for scheduled passenger service. It supports extensive domestic connectivity while also linking the capital with major international markets across the Americas and selected long-haul destinations.

The airport serves a broad mix of local travelers, business passengers, connecting traffic, and international visitors. Its network role is especially important for domestic interchange, where Bogotá functions as the principal transfer point for travel between Colombian cities.

The airport’s role includes:

  • National hub
  • Domestic connector
  • International gateway
  • Transfer airport
  • Major airline base

Location and Catchment Area

The airport is located in Bogotá and serves the capital city as well as the wider central Colombian catchment. Its position makes it the primary air access point for the national government, business districts, and the metropolitan population.

It also draws passengers from surrounding regions that rely on Bogotá for domestic and international connections. The airport’s catchment is therefore both metropolitan and national in scope, with added importance for connecting itineraries.

Airport History

Bogotá El Dorado was developed in the mid-20th century to replace older aviation facilities serving the capital. It quickly became the country’s principal commercial airport as air traffic in Colombia expanded and Bogotá’s role as the national center of government and commerce grew.

The airport has undergone repeated modernization and expansion to keep pace with rising passenger demand and the consolidation of airline networks. Over time, its facilities were upgraded to handle larger aircraft, higher traffic volumes, and more complex domestic and international operations.

A major phase in its modern development came with terminal and airfield improvements that strengthened its position as a hub airport. These projects helped support new route growth, higher transfer volumes, and more efficient processing for both arriving and departing passengers.

Today the airport functions as Colombia’s main hub and the core of the country’s scheduled passenger network. Its current role reflects decades of expansion from a national capital airport into a major international gateway for the Andean region.
