It later became an important commercial airport as postwar air travel expanded and the city’s passenger demand increased. The airport was renamed in honor of former Canadian Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson.
As traffic grew, the airport underwent repeated expansion and modernization to handle larger aircraft and rising passenger numbers. New runways, terminal changes, and airside improvements supported the transition from a regional airport into a major national and international gateway.
The airport’s current role was shaped by long-term infrastructure investment and the consolidation of domestic, transborder, and overseas services into a large hub operation. The opening and development of modern passenger facilities helped accommodate connecting traffic and the shift toward higher-capacity operations.
Today, Toronto Pearson functions as the principal air gateway for the Toronto region and one of the most important aviation hubs in Canada. Its history reflects the broader growth of Toronto from a regional market into a major global metropolitan center.
