Commercial aviation at Arlanda developed as Stockholm’s older airports became less suitable for jet-era traffic and international expansion. The airport was planned and opened to serve as the city’s main long-term aviation facility, with capacity for both domestic and international operations.
Over time, the airport expanded through the addition and modernization of terminal facilities, supporting the shift toward larger aircraft, higher passenger volumes, and a more complex route network. Its terminal system evolved to accommodate separate airline and traffic flows, which helped the airport manage growth in both short-haul European travel and longer-distance services.
Runway and airfield development have also been central to the airport’s modernization. The current runway system supports a wide range of commercial operations and has allowed Arlanda to retain its role as Sweden’s leading hub airport as traffic patterns changed over the decades.
Today the airport functions as the country’s principal international gateway and the main base for Sweden’s largest airline. Its development reflects the broader transformation of Stockholm air travel from a primarily regional system into a multi-market hub with domestic, European, and intercontinental links.
