The best fighter jet in the world in 2026 is the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor. No other aircraft combines all-aspect stealth, sustained supersonic cruise, and thrust-vectoring agility in one airframe, which is why it remains the benchmark for pure air superiority two decades after it entered service.

Its stablemate, the F-35 Lightning II, sits just behind and is arguably the more consequential aircraft. It cannot out-turn a Raptor, but its sensor fusion, networking, and sheer numbers make it the most capable combat system in the sky.

How this ranking works

There is no single “best fighter” number, so this list ranks by overall combat capability: stealth and survivability, sensor fusion, networking, weapons reach, and kinematics, weighted by combat record and fielded numbers. Generation is the tiebreaker at the top, which is why every 5th-generation stealth jet outranks every 4.5-generation one, even fast and heavily armed ones. Trainers, light attack aircraft, and pure interceptors are excluded.

1. Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor

The F-22 is still the best air-superiority fighter ever fielded. It pairs all-aspect stealth with a top speed of about Mach 2.25, roughly 1,500 mph (2,410 km/h), and it can supercruise past Mach 1.8 without afterburner, something no rival can sustain.

Twin F119 engines with two-dimensional thrust vectoring give it a level of agility that keeps it lethal in a close fight, while its stealth lets it shoot first from beyond visual range. That combination of speed, stealth, and maneuverability is why it holds the top spot over the more modern F-35. It is also one of the fastest fighter jets in the world.

Never sold to anyone

The Raptor is the only top-tier fighter the United States has refused to export. A 1998 law banned foreign sales to protect its stealth and sensor secrets, so all 186 production jets serve only with the U.S. Air Force. Production ended in 2011, which is why the fleet is now the rarest frontline fighter on this list.

2. Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II

The F-35 is the most capable overall combat system flying, and by far the most numerous 5th-generation fighter. It tops out around Mach 1.6, roughly 1,200 mph (1,930 km/h), slower than the Raptor, but it was never built to win a turning fight.

Its edge is information. The F-35 fuses radar, infrared, and electronic-warfare data into a single picture and shares it across a formation, letting the pilot see and strike first.

It comes in three versions, including a carrier variant and a vertical-landing model, and it is combat proven, having flown strike missions with several air forces. It anchors the list of the best American fighter jets alongside the Raptor.

More than 1,100 built and counting

With over 1,100 delivered by 2026 and orders from more than a dozen nations, the F-35 has become the backbone of Western air power. That scale is itself a capability: a fighter that shares a common sensor and data picture across allied fleets is far harder to counter than any single airframe.

3. Chengdu J-20 Mighty Dragon

China’s J-20 is the most serious challenger to American air dominance, and the only non-US stealth fighter now fielded in real numbers. It is a large, long-range design built to strike high-value targets like tankers and airborne radar aircraft from deep inside contested airspace.

It carries the long-reach PL-15 air-to-air missile and tops out around Mach 2. Early jets flew on interim engines, but newer WS-15 powerplants are closing the performance gap, and production is scaling faster than any other 5th-generation program outside the F-35. Built for the tanker kill

The J-20’s long range and long-range missiles point to a clear mission: reach past enemy fighters to destroy the tankers and radar aircraft they depend on. Take those away and even the best fighter fleet loses its reach, which is why the J-20 worries Western planners out of proportion to its dogfighting record.

4. Sukhoi Su-57 Felon

Russia’s Su-57 is a genuine 5th-generation fighter, but it lands fourth because of how few exist and how much about it stays unproven. It is supremely maneuverable, with thrust-vectoring engines and a top speed near Mach 2, and it can supercruise.

Its weaknesses are stealth and scale. Analysts widely judge its low-observable shaping and build quality behind the F-22 and F-35, and only a few dozen have been delivered. It is the sharp end of our list of the best Russian fighter jets, but potential, not fielded strength, keeps it here.

5. Eurofighter Typhoon

The Typhoon is the best non-stealth air-superiority fighter in the world, and the top of the 4.5-generation tier. Flown by the UK, Germany, Italy, Spain, and export customers, it is a fast, agile interceptor with a top speed of about Mach 2, roughly 1,320 mph (2,120 km/h), and rapid acceleration to altitude.

Its trump card is the Meteor missile, a ramjet-powered weapon with a “no-escape zone” far larger than older radar missiles. Latest-standard jets add an AESA radar that keeps the Typhoon competitive against low-observable threats. It is the modern peak of the British fighter jet lineage.

6. Dassault Rafale

France’s Rafale is the most well-rounded 4.5-generation fighter, an “omnirole” jet that swings between air superiority, strike, reconnaissance, and nuclear delivery in a single sortie. It reaches about Mach 1.8 and, like the Typhoon, carries the Meteor missile.

What sets it apart is its SPECTRA electronic-warfare suite, one of the best self-protection systems on any fighter, and a strong combat record over Libya, Mali, Iraq, and Syria. 7. Boeing F-15EX Eagle II

The F-15EX is proof that a 50-year-old design can still be one of the best fighters in the world. It is the newest, most advanced Eagle, with fly-by-wire controls, an AESA radar, a modern electronic-warfare suite, and the raw performance the Eagle has always had.

It is fast, topping Mach 2.5, roughly 1,650 mph (2,655 km/h), and it can carry more air-to-air missiles than any other fighter here, over a dozen on a single jet. It is not stealthy, so it works as a long-range missile truck behind the F-22 and F-35, and as one of the biggest fighter jets in service, it has the payload to match.

8. Saab JAS 39 Gripen E

The Gripen E is the smartest lightweight fighter in the world, and the value champion of this list. It is a single-engine jet with a top speed near Mach 2, a modern AESA radar, superb electronic warfare, and the Meteor missile, all at a fraction of the cost and maintenance burden of a twin-engine rival.

It is built to disperse to small road bases and be turned around by a tiny crew, a design philosophy aimed squarely at surviving a first strike. Among single-engine fighter jets, nothing else packs this much capability into so lean an airframe.

9. Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet

The Super Hornet is the workhorse of US carrier aviation and one of the most combat-proven fighters flying. It is a twin-engine, carrier-capable multirole jet with a top speed around Mach 1.6, an AESA radar, and, in the latest Block III standard, better range, networking, and reduced radar signature.

It does not win on raw performance, but it does everything a carrier air wing needs and does it reliably from a pitching deck. That flexibility, and a deep global weapons integration, keep it in the top ten.

10. Sukhoi Su-35 Flanker-E

The Su-35 is Russia’s most capable operational non-stealth fighter and one of the most maneuverable aircraft ever built. Thrust-vectoring engines let it perform post-stall tricks no Western fighter attempts, and it is genuinely fast, topping Mach 2.25 with a long combat range.

The catch is that dogfighting agility matters less in an era of beyond-visual-range missiles and stealth. Its powerful but conventional radar and large radar signature leave it exposed to jets that see and shoot first, which is why raw maneuverability alone cannot lift it higher.

11. Shenyang J-16

The J-16 is China’s heavy multirole workhorse, a Flanker-derived twin-engine fighter fielded in large and growing numbers. It carries a modern AESA radar and the long-range PL-15 missile, and it forms the high-end conventional partner to the stealthy J-20.

Numbers are the point here. A large fleet of well-armed 4.5-generation jets, backed by a stealth spearhead, is a serious combined force, and the J-16 is the muscle behind it.

12. F-16 Block 70/72 Viper

The newest F-16 earns a place because the Viper simply refuses to age out. Block 70/72 jets add an AESA radar, a modern cockpit, and extended structural life to the most-produced modern fighter in history, keeping a 1970s design relevant into the 2040s.

It reaches about Mach 2 and remains agile, affordable, and widely supported. For most air forces that will never buy a stealth fighter, a new-build Viper is the most capable jet they can realistically field, which is why fresh orders keep coming.

Is the F-22 or F-35 better?

It depends on the mission, which is why both sit at the top. The F-22 wins the pure air-superiority fight: it is faster, it supercruises, and it out-maneuvers everything, so if the job is to own the sky, the Raptor is still the best. The F-35 wins almost everywhere else, because its sensor fusion, networking, and combat-proven strike ability make it the more useful and more consequential aircraft across real missions. Calling either one “better” without naming the mission is the most common mistake people make about both jets.

The Near-Misses and What Comes Next

A few aircraft just missed the cut. South Korea’s KAI KF-21 Boramae and China’s carrier-capable J-35 are entering service and could climb fast, while India’s Tejas and upgraded MiG-35s round out the credible field.

The bigger shift is generational. Sixth-generation programs are now underway, including the US Air Force’s F-47 under the NGAD effort, the UK-Japan-Italy GCAP, and Europe’s FCAS. Japan’s move into GCAP is reshaping the best fighter jets of Japan, and by the 2030s these designs will reorder the top of this list. For now, though, the Raptor still rules.
