Boeing Put the 747’s Cockpit Upstairs Because It Expected Supersonic Jets to Turn It Into a Freighter. It Has Outlived Concorde by 23 Years.

Why the 747 has a hump: Boeing raised the cockpit so the nose could open for cargo once supersonic jets took the passengers. Concorde retired first.

The 747’s hump is an insurance policy against a future that never arrived. Half of that policy paid out anyway.

The 747 has a hump because Boeing and its launch customer, Pan Am, expected supersonic airliners to take over long-haul passenger flying. Raising the cockpit above the main deck left the whole nose free to swing open, so a jumbo that lost its passengers could earn a second living hauling freight.

Supersonic travel lost instead. Concorde carried its last paying passengers in October 2003, almost exactly 23 years ago, and airlines are still selling tickets on 747s in September 2026.

The freighter plan came true as well, just not for the reason Boeing expected.

Pan Am’s founder thought the jumbo would end up hauling cargo

In 1965, Boeing moved engineer Joe Sutter off the 737 program to run design studies for a giant new airliner, already numbered 747. Pan Am placed the launch order in April 1966: 25 of the original Boeing 747-100 for $525 million.

The timing was awkward. Boeing was also competing for the U.S. government’s supersonic transport contract, and on January 1, 1967, its design was announced as the winner.

Pan Am founder Juan Trippe believed the big subsonic jets would end up as freighters once the supersonic transport took over passenger routes, Bill Sweetman wrote in Smithsonian’s Air & Space magazine in 2003. Trippe was one of Boeing’s best customers, so Boeing designed around his forecast.

Boeing had already studied a full double-deck airliner in 1965 and rejected it as too heavy. The answer was one wide main deck with the flight deck perched above it, which let the entire nose hinge upward so cargo could roll straight in underneath the pilots.

The hump itself was close to an accident. Boeing’s first cockpit fairing was a rounded bump that produced too much drag, so engineers stretched it backward into a teardrop.

That left empty space behind the cockpit, and Trippe’s team persuaded Boeing to turn it into a first-class bar and lounge. The 747’s famous upper deck began as leftover room above a freighter nose.

Same winter, opposite fates

The 747 first flew on February 9, 1969. Concorde made its first flight 21 days later, on March 2, 1969. Only one of them is still carrying passengers.

On paper, supersonic travel was winning. Boeing’s 2707 had grown into a 300-seat design, and when Congress cut off its funding in 1971, there were 115 unfilled orders from 25 airlines. No prototype was ever completed.

The Anglo-French Concorde did reach service, on January 21, 1976. It had drawn non-binding options for more than 100 aircraft from the major airlines of the day, but only Air France and British Airways took delivery, seven jets each.

Pan Am, the airline that had asked for a freighter-ready 747, cancelled its Concorde options on January 31, 1973. TWA cancelled the same day, and American followed within weeks.

Seat counts explain a lot of it. Concorde seated 92 to 128 passengers, while a typical three-class 747 seats 366. Its sonic boom also kept it from flying supersonic over land, which confined Concorde’s record-setting speed largely to ocean crossings.

Only 20 Concordes were ever built, and 14 of them flew for airlines. Boeing started 747 production in 1967 and did not stop until January 2023, after 1,574 airplanes.

The 747 adapted where Concorde could not. When the 1973 oil crisis hit, virtually every 747 operator ripped out the upstairs lounge and filled the space with paying seats.

The freighter half of Boeing’s bet paid out anyway

The hedge was never wasted. Lufthansa began the first 747 freighter service with the 747-200F in 1972, and the nose door behind the raised cockpit became the jumbo’s defining cargo feature.

The last 747 Boeing ever built was a freighter. The 1,574th airframe, a 747-8 Freighter, was delivered to Atlas Air on January 31, 2023.

Supersonic jets never pushed the 747 out of passenger service. Fuel-efficient twin-engine widebodies did, led by larger versions of Boeing’s own 777 such as the 777-300ER.

The result is the fleet Trippe predicted, for a reason he did not. About 420 747s were still in service in January 2026, according to Simple Flying, and the three largest operators were all cargo airlines: Atlas Air with 65, UPS with about 43 and Cargolux with 30.

The nose door also has no successor. Neither Boeing nor Airbus offers a production freighter with a front-loading nose, so outsized single-piece loads that need one still fly on 747s, and heavy-maintenance shops report rising demand to keep 20-year-old airframes flying.

Four airlines still sell 747 seats in 2026

By Simple Flying’s count in March 2026, four airlines still fly scheduled 747 passenger services: Lufthansa, Korean Air, Air China and Russia’s Rossiya.

Lufthansa is the largest, with 26 at that count: 18 747-8s and eight older 747-400s. The jumbo still flies full, too: on August 6, 2026, a Lufthansa 747-8 diverted to Brazzaville with 363 passengers on board after an unexplained smell filled the cabin.

The older jets are going. In May 2026, Lufthansa said it would ground two 747-400s from October, citing fuel prices more than double their level before the Iran war, and plans to retire the type in 2027. The 747-8 stays on as its flagship.

Korean Air is down to four 747-8Is after selling five, and its original plan pointed to retiring them in the early 2030s.

Supersonic passenger travel, meanwhile, is still a proposal. In July 2026, the FAA proposed repealing the U.S. ban on civil supersonic flight over land, with a new generation of quiet-boom airliners in mind. None of them is carrying passengers yet.

In 1969, Concorde looked like the future and the 747 looked like the stopgap. Every 747 still flying carries its cockpit where the stopgap plan put it.
