Operational Context

Boeing 747-8 — long-range widebody four-engine jet

The 747-8 first flew in 2010 and entered service in 2011 for the freighter variant, followed by passenger service in 2012. It features a stretched fuselage and advanced wing design derived in part from 787 technology. The aircraft retains the iconic upper-deck hump characteristic of the 747 line.

Powered by four General Electric GEnx turbofan engines producing approximately 66,500 pounds of thrust (296 kN) each, the 747-8 cruises at around 490 knots (905 km/h). Maximum takeoff weight exceeds 975,000 pounds (442,000 kg). Passenger seating typically ranges from 410 to over 460 depending on configuration.

The 747-8 marked the final major evolution of the jumbo jet. While passenger sales were limited, the freighter variant achieved stronger demand. Production concluded in 2023, closing a significant chapter in commercial aviation history.
