The best military drone in the world in 2026 is still the General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper. Nothing else in squadron service anywhere carries 3,850 pounds (1,746 kg) of weapons and sensors for 27 hours straight, and no other armed drone comes close to its combat record.

That answer comes with a warning the rest of the internet leaves out. The Reaper has been shot down repeatedly by an insurgent group using decades-old surface-to-air missiles, and the aircraft designed to replace it went into production this year.

This list ranks drones that are actually in service and doing the job as of 2026, measured by what they have proven in real operations rather than what a brochure claims. Programs still in flight test are ranked separately further down, because mixing the two is the mistake almost every other list makes.

How this ranking works

The measure is proven combat capability actually fielded in 2026, weighing five things: what the drone has done in real operations, how much it carries and for how long, whether it survives contested airspace, how autonomously it flies, and how many are in service. Aircraft still in flight test are excluded from the numbered ranking and covered separately, because an unflown capability cannot be judged against a flown one. Loitering munitions such as the Shahed-136 are one-way weapons rather than reusable aircraft, so they get their own section too.

1. General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper

The MQ-9 is the benchmark every other armed drone is measured against, and more than 500 have been built. General Atomics rates the MQ-9A at over 27 hours endurance, 240 knots (276 mph) top speed, an operating altitude up to 50,000 feet, and a 3,850-pound (1,746 kg) payload split between internal sensors and external stores.

The extended-range MQ-9A ER pushes endurance to 34 hours with wing-mounted fuel pods. The larger MQ-9B SkyGuardian and SeaGuardian stretch the wingspan to 79 feet (24 m) and are the versions most new customers are buying.

What puts it first is not any single number. It is that the Reaper has flown more armed sorties in more conflicts than every other entry on this list combined, and it is the platform that turned the earlier Predator from a spotter into a shooter.

The Reaper's real problem: it gets shot down

Since October 2023, Houthi forces in Yemen have claimed 17 to 19 MQ-9 shootdowns using surface-to-air missiles derived from 1970s Soviet designs. US officials have acknowledged a number of losses while disputing the total, but even the confirmed figure runs to hundreds of millions of dollars at roughly $34 million per aircraft. A large, slow, non-stealthy drone cannot survive airspace that is genuinely defended. That single fact is why the US Air Force has spent the last three years trying to divest the Reaper and buy something else, and why every entry in the ‘next generation’ section below exists.

2. Bayraktar Akinci

Baykar’s Akinci is the most capable drone of its class that did not come from the United States, and it is closing the gap fast. It carries over 3,300 pounds (1,500 kg) across eight hardpoints, flies for more than 24 hours, and reaches 45,000 feet on twin turboprops.

Its maximum takeoff weight is 13,228 pounds (6,000 kg) and its stated range is around 4,700 miles (7,500 km). More than 110 had been built by early 2026.

The reason it outranks everything below it is the weapons list. The Akinci can carry the SOM cruise missile and the Gokdogan and Bozdogan air-to-air missiles, which makes it the only in-service drone here that can credibly shoot back at an aircraft.

It has also sold widely, with operators including Turkiye, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. That export spread matters: a drone nobody buys is a technology demonstrator, not a weapon system.

3. GJ-11 Sharp Sword

The GJ-11 is the only stealthy flying-wing combat drone anywhere in the world that is genuinely in frontline service. China has paraded it publicly twice, in 2019 and again in 2025, and it has been photographed deployed to airbases in Tibet.

Published figures are estimates rather than manufacturer data. Analysts put it at roughly 33 feet (10 m) long with a 46-foot (14 m) wingspan and a takeoff weight near 22,000 pounds (10,000 kg), with an internal bay for precision-guided bombs and cruise missiles.

It ranks third rather than higher for one honest reason: nobody outside China knows what it has actually done. The airframe is real, the deployments are documented, but there is no combat record to weigh.

Its significance is what it says about the balance of unmanned airpower, a theme we cover in our breakdown of US and Chinese fighter jets compared. China fielded an operational stealth UCAV years before the West fielded one.

4. Northrop Grumman MQ-4C Triton

The Triton is the best pure surveillance drone in service and the largest aircraft on this list. Its wingspan is 131 feet (40 m), wider than a Boeing 757, and it cruises at 56,000 feet for up to 30 hours on a single Rolls-Royce AE 3007 turbofan.

Maximum takeoff weight is 32,250 pounds (14,630 kg). A single sortie can sweep more than a million square miles of ocean, which is why the US Navy built it and why Australia bought it.

It carries no weapons at all, which is exactly why it sits below the armed entries above it. On the measure of finding things, though, nothing beats it.

The Triton also inherits the mission of a drone many readers expect to see on this list. The US Air Force is retiring the RQ-4 Global Hawk by fiscal 2027, having decided it is too vulnerable for a war against a serious opponent, while the Navy keeps flying its maritime cousin.

5. Bayraktar TB2

No drone on this list has changed more minds than the TB2, and it is the smallest armed entry here. It weighs 1,543 pounds (700 kg) fully loaded, carries just 330 pounds (150 kg) of munitions, tops out around 27,000 feet, and runs on a 100-horsepower Rotax engine you could fit in a light aircraft.

It costs roughly a sixth of an MQ-9. More than 30 countries have bought it, including Poland, the first NATO member outside Turkiye to do so.

The TB2 earns its place because of what it proved in Nagorno-Karabakh in 2020 and Ukraine in early 2022. A cheap drone with a good camera and four small missiles can dismantle an army that has not prepared for it.

It also proved the reverse, which is why it is fifth and not second. Once Russia moved modern electronic warfare and layered air defense forward in 2022, TB2 effectiveness collapsed within months.

6. IAI Heron TP (Eitan)

Israel’s largest drone is also one of the most under-reported. The Heron TP has an 85-foot (26 m) wingspan, a maximum takeoff weight of 11,900 pounds (5,400 kg), and a payload capacity of around 5,950 pounds (2,700 kg), the highest of any medium-altitude drone in service.

A single 1,200-horsepower Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6 turboprop keeps it aloft for more than 30 hours at up to 46,000 feet. Germany and Greece both lease or operate it alongside the Israeli Air Force.

It ranks here rather than higher because Israel says very little about its armed configurations and its operational use. On raw carrying capacity it would place considerably higher.

7. Wing Loong II (GJ-2)

The Wing Loong II is China’s answer to the Reaper and its most successful military aircraft export of any kind. It flies for up to 32 hours, reaches 32,500 feet, carries around 1,060 pounds (480 kg) on six hardpoints, and has a 67-foot (20.5 m) wingspan.

Its specification sheet sits below the MQ-9 on almost every line. Its customer list does not.

Pakistan, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Nigeria, Algeria and others operate it, largely because the United States restricts Reaper exports under the Missile Technology Control Regime and China does not. It has seen combat in Libya and across the Sahel.

8. General Atomics MQ-1C Gray Eagle 25M

The Gray Eagle is the US Army’s Reaper: a smaller, lighter derivative flying 25 hours at up to 29,000 feet with 1,075 pounds (488 kg) of sensors and up to four Hellfire missiles. The 25M version added an open architecture that lets the Army swap payloads without redesigning the aircraft.

It is last on this list for a reason that says more about the category than about the aircraft. In April 2025 the Secretary of Defense directed the Army to stop buying it.

A capable, combat-proven drone was cancelled not because it failed but because the mission it was built for, orbiting a permissive battlefield for a day at a time, is disappearing. That is the clearest signal on this page of where military aviation is heading.

The next generation: drones that will rewrite this list

The following aircraft are not ranked above because none of them is in squadron service yet. Several will almost certainly top this list within five years, and two have already done things no drone had ever done.

FQ-42A Dark Merlin and FQ-44A Fury

These are the two winners of the US Air Force Collaborative Combat Aircraft program, better known as fighter drones or loyal wingmen. General Atomics builds the FQ-42A Dark Merlin; Anduril builds the FQ-44A Fury, a 5,000-pound aircraft powered by a single Williams FJ44-4M turbofan, capable of Mach 0.95 and 50,000 feet while carrying two AMRAAM missiles.

The YFQ-42A flew first on 27 August 2025 and the YFQ-44A followed on 31 October 2025. On 17 June 2026 the Air Force put both into production, ordering more than 150 aircraft for delivery by 2030 at a target unit cost below $30 million.

The program has not been flawless. A YFQ-42A was lost in a mishap on 6 April 2026, two months before the production decision.

The fastest fighter program in half a century

The CCA timeline runs prototype contract in April 2024, ground testing in April 2025, first flight in October 2025, production contract in June 2026. The Air Force awarded those production contracts four months ahead of schedule and describes it as the fastest path from prototype to production for a fighter-class aircraft in more than 50 years. For comparison, the F-35 took 14 years from first flight to initial operational capability.

Bayraktar Kizilelma

Baykar’s jet-powered UCAV did something on 30 November 2025 that no unmanned aircraft had managed before. It shot down an aerial target beyond visual range using a Gokdogan air-to-air missile.

Every fighter drone program in the world is chasing air-to-air capability. A Turkish company got there first, and it is not close.

The first drone to win an air-to-air fight

Until 30 November 2025, no uncrewed aircraft had ever destroyed another aircraft with a beyond-visual-range missile. Baykar’s Kizilelma did it with the Turkish-built Gokdogan, guided by its own onboard AESA radar. The company that made the achievement possible started out building a $5 million propeller drone with four small bombs on it.

Boeing MQ-28A Ghost Bat

Australia’s loyal wingman is the most operationally mature Western fighter drone outside the US program. On 8 December 2025 an MQ-28A destroyed a target drone with an AIM-120 AMRAAM at Woomera, teamed with an E-7 Wedgetail and an F/A-18F Super Hornet.

It flew in the United States for the first time in May 2026 and took part in Exercise Valiant Shield in the Northern Marianas that June. Boeing has confirmed that Block 3 aircraft will carry weapons internally.

Boeing MQ-25A Stingray

The Stingray will be the first uncrewed aircraft to operate routinely from a US aircraft carrier, refuelling the air wing and extending its reach. The first production-representative aircraft flew on 25 April 2026 and made its second flight that June.

Deployment has slipped badly. The Navy now expects initial operational capability in 2029, several years later than planned.

Kratos XQ-58A Valkyrie

The Valkyrie is the cheapest credible fighter drone in development, with a projected unit cost of around $4 million at 50 aircraft a year and potentially under $2 million at higher rates. It launches from a rail rather than a runway and needs no airbase.

In January 2026 the US Marine Corps picked a Northrop Grumman and Kratos team to build its first loyal wingmen under a $231.5 million agreement, with fielding alongside the F-35B planned for 2029.

Sukhoi S-70 Okhotnik

Russia’s stealth flying wing is included here as a cautionary entry rather than a contender. On 5 October 2024 an S-70 lost contact with its operators over Ukraine and drifted toward Ukrainian-held territory, and a Russian Su-57 shot it down to stop it being captured.

Roughly three prototypes exist and serial production has been postponed repeatedly. The program is years behind the Chinese and American equivalents.

The most consequential military drone in the world is not on this list

Judged on military effect delivered per dollar, nothing here comes near the Shahed-136, known in Russian service as the Geran-2. It is a delta-wing loitering munition with a moped engine, a warhead, and no way home.

Russia simplified the design and scaled it brutally. Estimates for 2026 put output between roughly 170 and 400 airframes a day at the Alabuga plant, at a cost widely reported between $35,000 and $50,000 each.

It is excluded from the ranking because it is a one-way weapon, not a reusable aircraft. But it is the reason the phrase “cost exchange ratio” now dominates air defense planning: shooting down a $40,000 drone with a $1 million interceptor is a trade you lose even when you win.

Any list that ranks military drones purely by capability misses this entirely. The most important thing that happened to military aviation in the 2020s was not a better drone. It was a cheap one, built by the thousand.

The moments that reordered this list

Seven events in six years took the drone from a counter-insurgency tool to the center of the air-combat debate.

2020

Nagorno-Karabakh. Azerbaijani TB2s destroy Armenian armor and air defenses on video, and every defense ministry on earth reopens its drone budget.

February 2022

Ukraine, the first months. TB2s hit Russian columns and become a folk symbol, then lose effectiveness within a year as Russian electronic warfare and layered SAMs move forward.

October 2023 onward

Yemen. Houthi forces begin downing MQ-9 Reapers with elderly surface-to-air missiles, and the survivability of large, slow drones stops being a theoretical question.

October 2024

The S-70 shootdown. A Russian Su-57 destroys Russia’s own stealth combat drone over Ukraine after it goes out of control, the first loss of a heavy UCAV anywhere.

November 2025

First air-to-air kill. Baykar’s Kizilelma shoots down an aerial target beyond visual range, the first time an uncrewed aircraft wins an air-to-air engagement.

December 2025

Ghost Bat fires live. An MQ-28A downs a target drone with an AMRAAM at Woomera while teamed with a Wedgetail and a Super Hornet.

June 2026

Fighter drones go into production. The US Air Force orders more than 150 FQ-42A and FQ-44A aircraft for delivery by 2030, four months ahead of schedule.

Which country has the best military drones?

The United States still has the deepest capability, the largest fleet and the most combat experience, and it now has the only fighter drones under a production contract. That is the honest answer to the leadership question.

Turkiye leads on a different measure that matters more than people expect. Baykar exports to more countries than any other manufacturer, and it reached armed autonomous air-to-air combat before anyone else.

China leads on scale and on availability. It fielded an operational stealth UCAV first, and it sells armed drones to buyers Washington will not supply.

Israel remains the quiet founder of the whole industry, having pioneered the armed reconnaissance drone decades before anyone else took it seriously. Russia, for all its drone use in Ukraine, is behind on every high-end program it has started.

Much less than it was in 2020 and 2022. It devastated forces that had not prepared for drones in Nagorno-Karabakh and in the opening months of the war in Ukraine, but once Russia pushed modern electronic warfare and layered air defenses forward, TB2 losses rose sharply and its effect fell away. It remains widely exported and useful in less-defended airspace.
