No sixth-generation fighter is in service anywhere in the world as of 2026. The furthest along is the Boeing F-47, the only one with a production designation, a signed development contract, and an airframe on a factory floor.

China has the counter-argument. Its J-36 has been flying since December 2024, while the F-47 is not due to fly until 2028. One country has hardware in the air, the other has a program on contract.

This list ranks the seven live sixth-generation fighter programs by how close each one is to a real, fielded aircraft, judged on verifiable evidence: hardware flown, contracts signed, and money committed. Concept art does not count. Status is as of August 2026.

How this ranking works

Every aircraft here is unbuilt, unflown, or classified, so ranking them by top speed or stealth would mean ranking brochures. The measure used instead is program maturity: has metal been cut, has it flown, is there a funded contract and a customer order. Where real performance figures have been officially disclosed, they are included and attributed. Programs with no hardware and no confirmed funding are ranked last, however impressive their claimed specifications.

What actually makes a fighter sixth generation

Fifth-generation fighters like the F-22 and F-35 were defined by stealth, sensor fusion, and supercruise. Sixth generation is defined by something different: the aircraft is a node in a network rather than a lone hunter.

Four capabilities show up in every serious program. Controlling uncrewed wingmen from the cockpit. Adaptive-cycle engines that shift between efficient cruise and high thrust in flight. Open mission-systems software that can be updated like an app. And a large internal fuel load for the ranges the Pacific demands.

Stealth is assumed rather than advertised. Every credible design is tailless, because vertical fins are the single biggest remaining radar reflector, which is why the newest concepts look so unlike the stealth fighters already in service.

The most real US sixth-generation hardware is not a fighter

The uncrewed wingmen are ahead of the jets they will fly beside. General Atomics flew the YFQ-42A in August 2025 and Anduril flew the YFQ-44A on October 31, 2025, and both have since been ordered into production. The F-47 they are meant to escort will not leave the ground until 2028.

The sixth-generation race so far

December 2022

Britain and Japan merge their programs. Tempest and the Mitsubishi F-X become one aircraft under GCAP, with Italy as the third partner.

December 2024

China flies two sixth-generation prototypes in one week. The Chengdu J-36 and Shenyang J-50 both appear in daylight, filmed from public roads.

March 2025

Boeing wins NGAD. The US Air Force awards the contract and gives the aircraft a designation, the F-47.

August to October 2025

The wingmen fly first. The YFQ-42A and YFQ-44A collaborative combat aircraft both make their maiden flights.

June 8, 2026

FCAS collapses. France and Germany end Europe’s flagship fighter program at ILA Berlin without a prototype ever being built.

July 2026

GCAP is refunded. Britain, Italy, and Japan sign a reported £4.6 billion deal for the next design phase as their demonstrator passes 75% complete.

1. Boeing F-47 (United States)

The F-47 takes the top spot because it is the only sixth-generation fighter that has stopped being a program and started being an aircraft. Boeing won the Next Generation Air Dominance contract in March 2025 and early manufacturing of the first airframe is underway in St. Louis.

The Air Force has disclosed unusually specific numbers for a classified jet. The F-47 will exceed Mach 2, carry a combat radius of more than 1,000 nautical miles, and the service intends to buy 185 or more of them to replace the F-22.

That combat radius is the number that matters. It is roughly 70% greater than the F-22’s, and it exists because a war in the Pacific is fought across distances that the current American fighter fleet cannot comfortably cross.

The program is also not starting from a blank sheet. Boeing and Lockheed Martin each built and flew an NGAD demonstrator before the award, and those aircraft logged several hundred flight hours between them, which is why a 2028 first flight is credible rather than optimistic.

There is one real caveat. The adaptive-cycle engines meant to power it, GE Aerospace’s XA102 and Pratt & Whitney’s XA103, are not expected to be ready until around 2030, so the first F-47s will fly on interim propulsion.

2. Chengdu J-36 (China)

The J-36 is the strongest challenge to the American position, and by one measure it is already ahead: it flies. Its first flight on December 26, 2024 was filmed from a public road in Chengdu, in daylight, in what was clearly a deliberate reveal.

It is a large tailless delta with three engines, an arrangement no other fighter in the world uses. Three engines suggest the designers prioritized raw power and internal volume, pointing to a long-range strike and air-superiority aircraft rather than a nimble dogfighter.

Progress since has been fast. By July 2026 observers had counted what appears to be a fifth airframe and a third distinct configuration, with changes to the intakes, exhausts, and landing gear, and the PLA released official footage of the aircraft in June 2026.

It ranks second rather than first for one honest reason. Nobody outside China knows what its sensors, engines, or weapons actually do, and a flying prototype is not a fielded capability. For how the two air forces compare today, see our breakdown of US and Chinese fighter jets.

J-36 is not its real name

China has never confirmed the designation. Analysts coined it from the serial number 36011 painted on the first prototype’s forward fuselage, following the naming pattern of earlier Chinese fighters. The same applies to the J-50. Both names are placeholders that stuck.

3. Shenyang J-50 (China)

China revealed a second sixth-generation prototype within days of the first, from a rival design bureau. The Shenyang J-50 is a tailless twin-engine aircraft, noticeably smaller than the J-36.

Its lateral control surfaces and proportions have led most analysts to read it as a carrier-capable design, which would give China a sixth-generation naval fighter on a similar timeline to the US Navy’s. It has been photographed in flight repeatedly through 2025 and 2026.

It sits below the J-36 simply because it has been seen less often and appears to be at an earlier stage. Both aircraft come from a national industry whose recent record is covered in our look at the best Chinese fighter jets.

4. F/A-XX (United States Navy)

The Navy’s sixth-generation fighter is the hardest program on this list to rank, because it is about to change status. The competition is down to Boeing and Northrop Grumman after Lockheed Martin was eliminated in 2025, and the development contract was targeted for award in August 2026.

F/A-XX is meant to replace the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and the EA-18G Growler, flying alongside the F-35C rather than replacing it. Northrop’s publicly shown concept is tailless with folding wings and dorsal intakes.

Carrier aviation makes the engineering harder. A sixth-generation jet needs range and internal volume, but it also has to survive catapult launches and arrested landings, and a tailless design has to do that without the control authority fins provide.

The program has also competed for funding with the F-47 and slipped as a result, which is why it ranks behind two Chinese aircraft that are already airborne.

5. GCAP / Tempest (United Kingdom, Italy, Japan)

The Global Combat Air Programme is the only multinational sixth-generation fighter still standing. It was created in December 2022 when Britain’s Tempest and Japan’s Mitsubishi F-X merged into a single aircraft, with Italy joining as the third equal partner.

That merger is why older articles listing Tempest and the F-X as separate programs are out of date. They are one jet now, targeted to enter service around 2035.

Real hardware exists. BAE Systems is building a crewed flying demonstrator in Lancashire that was reported at 75% complete by volume in 2026, using robotics and 3D printing, with first flight planned for late 2027.

The three governments signed a reported £4.6 billion deal in July 2026 to fund the next design phase. With FCAS gone, GCAP has also become the obvious landing place for Germany, which is now reported to be weighing whether to join.

6. France’s national fighter (Dassault)

This is the newest program on the list, and it exists only because a bigger one died. When FCAS collapsed in June 2026, France announced that Dassault Aviation would develop a French sixth-generation fighter alone.

France has the credibility to attempt it. Dassault is the only European company that has designed, built, and exported a modern fighter without partners, and the Rafale F5 upgrade plus a companion combat drone will bridge the gap.

It ranks sixth because there is no designation, no funded development contract, and no hardware. National ambition is not a program yet.

7. MiG-41 / PAK DP (Russia)

The MiG-41 has been described as a sixth-generation interceptor since 2018, and it remains the most heavily promoted aircraft on this list with the least to show for it.

The claims are extraordinary: speeds beyond Mach 4, near-space operating altitudes, the ability to intercept hypersonic missiles, and a pulse-detonation engine. None has been demonstrated, and no prototype or mockup has ever been shown publicly.

Official Russian reporting went quiet around 2023 and the occasional revival since has come from state-linked media rather than flight testing. Meanwhile the MiG-31 it is supposed to replace, last built in 1994, is still flying.

Sanctions, materials shortages, and a defense industry stretched by war make a near-term breakthrough unlikely. It is included because the program is officially acknowledged, and ranked last because that is all it is. Russia’s real fighter strength is covered in our list of the best Russian fighter jets.

What about FCAS, the AMCA, and seventh-generation fighters?

FCAS is dead, and that is the biggest change of 2026

Europe’s flagship Future Combat Air System was cancelled on June 8, 2026, when France and Germany confirmed the end of the crewed fighter at its heart. Nine years and three governments produced no prototype. It was killed by a work-share fight between Dassault and Airbus over who would lead, not by any technical failure. The drone and combat-cloud elements continue, and Spain has been left without a clear path to a future carrier fighter.

India’s HAL AMCA appears on many sixth-generation lists and does not belong on one. It is a fifth-generation stealth fighter with a planned upgrade path to some sixth-generation features, which makes it a peer of the F-35, not the F-47.

Turkey’s KAAN and South Korea’s KF-21 attract the same confusion for the same reason. Both are genuine achievements and both are fifth-generation aircraft.

Sweden and Brazil have run sixth-generation concept studies, and Sweden has openly questioned whether a crewed fighter is the right answer at all. Neither has a program that belongs in a ranking.

There is no such thing as a seventh-generation fighter. The generations are an informal shorthand rather than an official standard, and with no sixth-generation aircraft yet in service, a seventh is a marketing term with nothing behind it.
