Operational Context

NHI NH90 NFH — naval frigate helicopter

The NH90 program began in the 1990s as a collaborative European effort to produce a new-generation military helicopter. The NFH, or NATO Frigate Helicopter, variant first flew in the early 2000s and entered service later that decade. It was developed to replace aging shipborne helicopters across NATO fleets.

Powered by two Rolls-Royce Turbomeca RTM322 or General Electric T700 engines depending on operator, the NH90 NFH cruises at approximately 160 knots (295 km/h). Maximum takeoff weight is about 23,000 pounds (10,400 kg). The helicopter incorporates fly-by-wire flight controls and composite construction for reduced weight and improved corrosion resistance.

The NFH variant carries dipping sonar, radar, and anti-submarine torpedoes, along with anti-ship missiles in some configurations. Its modern cockpit and mission systems support networked fleet operations. The NH90 NFH remains a key component of several European naval aviation forces.
