Operational Context

Boeing AH-64D Apache Longbow — advanced attack helicopter

The AH-64D first flew in the mid-1990s as a modernization of the earlier AH-64A. It introduced the AN/APG-78 Longbow radar mounted above the rotor system. The helicopter entered operational service in 1997.

Powered by two turboshaft engines producing approximately 1,900 shaft horsepower each, the AH-64D cruises at around 140 knots (260 km/h). Maximum takeoff weight exceeds 23,000 pounds (10,430 kg). Armament includes a 30 mm cannon and various missiles and rockets.

The Apache Longbow provides enhanced target acquisition and survivability. It has been deployed in numerous conflicts worldwide. The aircraft remains one of the most capable attack helicopters in service.
