A French Air and Space Force Mirage 2000D crashed near Rogéville, in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department of northeastern France, at about 10:40 p.m. on October 20, 2026. One of its two crew members has been found dead, and the search for the other was still under way on October 21, the Ministry of the Armed Forces said.
The two-seat jet belonged to Fighter Squadron 2/3 “Champagne” at Air Base 133 Nancy-Ochey and was returning from a mission when it went down, according to the Air and Space Force statement.
What the Air and Space Force has confirmed
Two aviators were on board: a fighter pilot and a weapons systems officer, known in French as a NOSA. The ministry said a body had been recovered and was still to be formally identified.
The cause has not been established. Both a safety investigation and a judicial investigation have been opened, the statement said, and no crew names had been released at the time of writing.
Colonel David Pappalardo, the service’s spokesperson, told French media that the jet was on a routine training mission and approaching Nancy-Ochey when radio and radar contact was lost. He said at least one crew member had been unable to eject, and that it was far too early to draw conclusions about the cause, ICI reported.
According to franceinfo, the aircraft was unarmed, with a young pilot in training in the front seat and a highly experienced weapons systems officer in the rear. Residents reported a loud explosion and a fireball, and debris was located at around 4 a.m. on October 21.
Firefighters, military rescue teams from Nancy-Ochey, gendarmes, a helicopter and drones are searching fields and woods around Rogéville, Tremblecourt and Domèvre-en-Haye, with a command post set up in Rogéville, franceinfo reported.
The Mirage 2000D and its recent upgrade
The Mirage 2000D is the two-seat, ground-attack variant of the Mirage 2000 family built by Dassault Aviation. The ministry describes it as a combat jet designed for ground-attack missions by day or night.
At Nancy-Ochey, the type is flown by the 3rd Fighter Wing, the parent unit of the Champagne squadron.

The fleet has just finished a mid-life upgrade: on June 16, 2026, the DGA procurement agency delivered the 50th and last renovated Mirage 2000D to the Air and Space Force, the ministry said. The upgrade added a 30mm gun pod, MICA infrared missiles in place of the older Magic II, and modernized avionics.
The stated aim of that work is to keep the Mirage 2000D flying beyond 2030. Whether the aircraft that crashed was one of the upgraded jets has not been reported.
Earlier fatal accidents in eastern France
The base has lost a Mirage 2000D crew before. On January 9, 2019, a jet from Fighter Squadron 1/3 “Navarre” at Nancy-Ochey flew into the ground near Mignovillard, in the Jura, during a low-altitude training flight, killing both crew members.
France’s military accident investigator, the BEA-É, found no technical fault or bird strike in that case. As AeroTime reported at the time, it named spatial disorientation as the most likely cause and pointed to a training deficit in the 3rd Fighter Wing.
On August 14, 2024, two Dassault Rafale fighters collided during a training exercise near Colombey-les-Belles, also in Meurthe-et-Moselle. One pilot ejected, and the two occupants of the other jet were killed, according to the BEA-É’s safety report.
No cause has been given for the Rogéville crash. For now, the Air and Space Force says the search for the second aviator continues and that support has been put in place for the families of both crew members.
