Lufthansa Technik has entered the final phase of certifying its AeroSHARK drag-reducing film for the Airbus A330, the Lufthansa Group said on September 9, 2026. The work began at the end of August and covers both the A330-200 and the A330-300.
An A330 belonging to Discover Airlines, the group’s leisure carrier, will be the first Airbus aircraft anywhere to be fitted with it. The jet is flying test sorties over several weeks either side of the modification at Elbe Flugzeugwerke in Dresden, and the Supplemental Type Certificate is being sought from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency.
What the film actually is
AeroSHARK is a surface film covered in microscopic grooves called riblets, copied from the flow-aligned structure of shark skin and laid out along the airflow. The ridges stand only about two thousandths of an inch high (50 micrometers).

It goes on the fuselage and the engine cowlings, where it cuts frictional drag. Lufthansa Technik, which developed the film with Surventis, the coatings company formerly known as BASF Coatings, puts the saving at about 1 percent of fuel burn on every flight and describes it as the only riblet technology approved for commercial aviation.
The scale of the job is easy to underestimate. Covering a Boeing 777-300ER takes about 10,200 square feet (950 sq m) of film, for which the group claims a saving closer to 1.1 percent.

Why 1 percent is worth this much effort
A single percent sounds like a rounding error until it is multiplied by a widebody’s annual fuel consumption. The Lufthansa Group says its 22 equipped aircraft together save about 42,000 pounds (19 metric tonnes) of fuel and 66 US tons (60 metric tonnes) of carbon dioxide every day.
That works out at roughly 1,900 pounds (860 kg) of fuel per aircraft per day. On SWISS’s 12 Boeing 777-300ERs alone, the group puts the annual figure at more than 5,300 US tons (4,800 metric tonnes) of fuel and up to 16,700 US tons (15,200 metric tonnes) of CO2, which it equates to 87 long-haul flights from Zurich to Mumbai.
The arithmetic also explains the target. A film application is a fixed cost paid once, while the saving accrues per flight hour, so the business case depends on how many hours the airframe has left and how many of them are long.
That is the A330ceo’s appeal. Lufthansa Technik calls it the world’s second-most-delivered long-haul model, and it is a type that will stay in service for years rather than one nearing retirement.
Where the 22 aircraft are
As of July 2026 the equipped Lufthansa Group fleet was SWISS’s entire Boeing 777-300ER fleet of 12 aircraft, five Lufthansa Cargo 777Fs, four of Austrian Airlines’ six 777-200ERs, and one Lufthansa 747-400. Every one of them is a Boeing, which is what the A330 approval would change.
The reason an Airbus has not carried it before now is regulatory rather than aerodynamic. A Supplemental Type Certificate is granted per aircraft type, and each one needs its own technical documentation, ground and flight testing, and a final in-service validation during normal operations.


What the release does not say
No target date is given for the A330 approval, and the group does not say how many aircraft it expects to equip afterwards. It also says AeroSHARK “is supported by Mastercard in the current project phase” under a sustainability partnership, without putting a figure on that support or describing its form.
A second track is already running in parallel. Lufthansa Technik and Surventis are testing about 70 film samples, each 8 by 8 inches (20 by 20 cm), on a Lufthansa City Airlines Airbus A319 registered D-ABGK, flying between Munich and Hamburg through February 2027.
The samples differ in material and layer composition, and the aim is a film tough enough for wings and stabilizers, surfaces that carry far higher aerodynamic loads than the fuselage. Lufthansa Technik says reaching them could double the saving.
The group is chasing efficiency on several fronts at once, including the 787 ecoDemonstrator tests it runs with Boeing and Rolls-Royce. Riblet film is the least glamorous of them and the only one already flying on 22 revenue aircraft.
Not certified yet
The A330 Supplemental Type Certificate has not been granted. Lufthansa Technik says the process is in its final phase and gives no completion date, and all of the fuel and emissions figures here are the Lufthansa Group’s own.
