A single-aisle jet is now timetabled for exactly as long as its maker says it can fly, on a route that cannot sell every seat to make it work.

The longest scheduled narrowbody flight in the world is IndiGo 6E21, Mumbai to Amsterdam, on an Airbus A321XLR. It leaves Mumbai at 6:30 a.m. and is blocked at 11 hours to Amsterdam, while the return is blocked at 9 hours 40 minutes, according to the schedule Simple Flying reported on Sept. 30, 2026.

Airbus markets the A321XLR with “a flight time of up to 11 hours.” IndiGo’s timetable now uses all of it.

The switch took effect on Oct. 25, 2026, when IndiGo ended the widebody flying it did with leased Boeing 787-9s. That morning FlightAware logged 6E21 on an A321neo-family jet at 9 hours 51 minutes, well inside the block.

Air Canada also launched an A321XLR route that weekend, Toronto to Tenerife, which Simple Flying called a near nine-hour nonstop. At about 3,600 miles (5,800 km), it is not close to the top of the list.

Why a Mumbai to Amsterdam flight needs 11 hours on a single-aisle jet

The straight great-circle line from Mumbai to Amsterdam is about 4,260 miles (6,860 km). IndiGo cannot fly it.

The shortest track crosses Pakistan, Iran and parts of Russia, so the flight swings west over Saudi Arabia and Egypt instead. Aerospace Global News put the penalty at about 14% extra distance in August 2026.

Simple Flying estimates the routing at roughly 4,200 nautical miles and says that exceeds the XLR’s real-world range. Winter headwinds and the narrowbody’s slower cruise, compared with the 787 it replaced, stretch the block further.

The fix is weight. IndiGo’s XLR has 195 seats, but the airline is selling just under 140 of them, temporarily holding back up to 28% of the cabin so the jet can carry enough fuel to fly nonstop.

It also cut the plan from daily flights to three a week, on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, so a single airframe covers the route. Simple Flying called the operation “a slot-sitting exercise”: a way to keep IndiGo’s Amsterdam slots in use until bigger jets arrive.

The longest narrowbody routes of 2026, by distance and by the clock

Ranked by straight-line distance between the two airports, the 10 longest narrowbody routes on 2026 schedules look like this. The block column is the longest published time, usually westbound into the wind.

Distances: AeroCorner great-circle calculation from OurAirports coordinates, rounded to 10 miles. Block times: IndiGo (Sept. 2026), Iberia and Aer Lingus (OAG, first half of 2026) and American (Cirium, July 2026) via Simple Flying; approximate times for SAS, Air Transat, Aer Lingus Bridgetown and La Compagnie from Business Traveller (May 2026).

In May 2026, Business Traveller named Iberia’s Madrid to Santo Domingo the longest narrowbody route in the world. IndiGo’s switch on Amsterdam knocked it to second: Mumbai to Amsterdam beats it by about 100 miles on the map and by far more in the air.

By the clock, the next tier sits at 9 hours 40 minutes: Iberia’s Madrid to Washington, American’s new Barcelona to New York, and IndiGo’s own return from Amsterdam. No other narrowbody schedule we found comes within an hour of IndiGo’s 11. Below that tier sits a crowd of Atlantic flights at roughly 9 to 9.5 hours.

Boeing’s single-aisle jet does not make the table. The longest Boeing 737 MAX 8 route, GOL’s Brasília to Orlando, is about 3,780 miles (6,080 km) and takes around 8 hours 20 minutes, per the same Business Traveller ranking.

Why a 195-seat jet on a widebody route matters

Every route in the table is an A321, and nearly all are the long-range versions of the A321neo. The XLR stretches the family to what Airbus advertises as “up to 4,700nm” of range.

Iberia took the first A321XLR on Oct. 30, 2024, and Airbus claimed 30% lower fuel burn per seat than previous-generation competitor aircraft. Iberia flew it from Madrid to Boston on Nov. 14, 2024, the type’s first transatlantic service.

What changed is the size of the bet. A route that once needed a widebody full of passengers can now open with the 180 to 220 seats Airbus quotes for a typical XLR cabin, which is how Dublin ends up nonstop to Nashville and Toronto to Tenerife.

The cost lands on the passenger. Iberia’s XLR offers lie-flat business seats, but economy on the Santo Domingo flight has 30 inches of legroom, in one aisle, for more than nine hours.

Mumbai to Amsterdam shows the other limit. The jet can technically fly the 11 hours, but only with up to 28% of the cabin unsold, which is why IndiGo treats the XLR as a stopgap rather than a long-haul plan.

The next long single-aisle flights on the schedule

More are coming. American’s Barcelona to New York XLR service was scheduled to start Oct. 25, 2026, and its Amsterdam to Philadelphia flight, blocked at 9 hours 20 minutes, was due from Feb. 25, 2027, according to Cirium data published in July.

United’s first A321XLR international flights start Dec. 1, 2026, from Washington Dulles to Amsterdam and Dublin. Air Canada adds Montreal to Tenerife on Oct. 31.

None of them is scheduled longer than IndiGo’s westbound block. The A321XLR’s brochure says 11 hours, and one airline’s timetable already uses all of it.

The longest flights in the world still belong to widebodies. Until a single-aisle jet with more range exists, 11 hours is as far as the narrowbody can be stretched.
