United Airlines flight UA1681 from Las Vegas to Newark returned to Harry Reid International Airport on Saturday night, October 24, 2026, after the crew reported a passenger disturbance, the FAA said. United described it as a “potential security concern” and said the Boeing 737 carried 150 passengers and six crew members.
The flight did not reach Newark until Sunday afternoon. United said the flight was held overnight because the crew had timed out, and it left for Newark on Sunday morning.
What happened on UA1681
Tracking data from FlightAware shows the jet pushed back from gate D57 at 10:37 p.m. and took off at 10:52 p.m. It climbed east to about 25,600 feet and crossed into northwestern Arizona, roughly 90 miles (145 km) from the Las Vegas airport, before turning around at about 11:05 p.m.

It then descended, circled for several minutes at around 9,900 feet east of the city, and touched down at 11:36 p.m., reaching the gate at 11:42 p.m. All times are Pacific.
That explains why early reports gave two different times. The FAA’s statement and FOX5 Las Vegas put the return at around 11:05 p.m., when the track shows the turn, while the Las Vegas Review-Journal cited FlightAware’s 11:42 p.m. gate arrival.
FlightStats lists the aircraft as N17310, and the FAA registry shows it is a Boeing 737 MAX 8 built in 2023. The same jet flew the rescheduled departure on Sunday.
The airport said the plane turned around shortly after takeoff because of a “passenger disturbance,” and referred questions to United and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, FOX5 reported. No injuries were reported, the station said, citing officials.
Neither United nor the airport has said what the passenger did, and no police statement on whether anyone was detained or charged had been published at the time of writing. The FAA said it will investigate.
Why the flight waited until morning
A “crew timeout” means the crew has reached the limit of the hours it may legally work, so it needs a full rest period before it can fly again. The return kept the crew on duty until at least 11:42 p.m., when the jet reached the gate.
For pilots, the FAA’s Part 117 rules cap each flight duty period and require at least 10 consecutive hours of rest before the next one. That rest must include an 8-hour window of uninterrupted sleep opportunity.
United did not say whether a fresh crew took the flight on Sunday. FlightAware shows it left the gate at 7:03 a.m. Pacific and reached the gate at Newark at 3:06 p.m. Eastern, about eight and a half hours after its scheduled 6:32 a.m. arrival.
What a passenger faces after a turnback
The FAA says it has a zero-tolerance policy on unruly passengers and investigates the incidents that airline crews report to it. It can propose fines of up to $43,658 per violation, and one incident can lead to several violations.
The agency has civil authority only and cannot prosecute anyone. It refers cases to the FBI when warranted, and passengers can still face criminal charges.
Two days earlier, on October 22, American Airlines flight AA339 returned to Miami after a passenger allegedly threatened flight attendants.
For UA1681, the open questions are what happened in the cabin and whether the passenger will face charges or an FAA fine.
