The fastest air-breathing jet, and the one most people picture, is the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, at 2,193 mph (3,529 km/h). Everything else on this list falls between those marks.

There is no single winner because the question hides four different records. Fastest ever: the unmanned X-43A (Mach 9.6). Fastest with a pilot: the rocket-powered X-15 (4,520 mph). Fastest air-breathing jet: the SR-71 (2,193 mph). Fastest still flying today: the MiG-31. 1. NASA X-43A: the fastest aircraft ever built



The X-43A is the outright record holder. On November 16, 2004, the small unmanned research vehicle hit Mach 9.6, roughly 6,800 mph (10,900 km/h), in level flight over the Pacific.
It did it with a scramjet, an air-breathing engine with no moving parts that only works once the aircraft is already flying at hypersonic speed. That is the frontier the whole fastest hypersonic aircraft field is built around, and the X-43A remains the fastest air-breathing aircraft ever flown.
A record-breaker the size of a surfboard
The X-43A was about 12 feet long, carried no pilot, and was designed to be thrown away. A B-52 dropped it, a booster rocket accelerated it, the scramjet fired for roughly 10 seconds, and then the whole aircraft splashed into the ocean. Each flight ended at the bottom of the Pacific.
2. North American X-15: the fastest crewed aircraft in history


The X-15 is the fastest aircraft ever flown with a human on board, and it has held that title since 1967. On October 3 of that year, pilot William “Pete” Knight took it to Mach 6.7, or 4,520 mph (7,274 km/h).
It was a rocket plane, not a jet, so it carried its own oxidizer and could climb clear of the atmosphere. The X-15 program flew to the edge of space and fed directly into the technology that later took astronauts into orbit.
Eight of its pilots earned astronaut wings
The X-15 flew high enough that eight of its pilots crossed the boundary of space and qualified as astronauts. One of them was Neil Armstrong, two years before he was selected for Apollo.
3. Boeing X-51A Waverider: the scramjet that flew the longest



The X-51A Waverider is slower than the X-43A but arguably more important. On May 1, 2013, it reached Mach 5.1, about 3,400 mph (5,470 km/h), and held that hypersonic speed for roughly 210 seconds under its own power.
That sustained burn, far longer than the X-43A’s brief flash, is why the X-51 is the aircraft modern hypersonic weapons trace their engineering back to. It proved a scramjet could run long enough to be useful, not just to set a number.
4. Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird: the fastest jet ever flown


The SR-71 is the fastest air-breathing, jet-powered aircraft ever built, and the fastest crewed aircraft that took off and landed on its own power. Its official record, set in 1976, stands at 2,193 mph (3,529 km/h), or Mach 3.3.
Nothing has beaten it in nearly 50 years. The Blackbird was a reconnaissance aircraft that outran every threat instead of dodging it, and it retired in 1998 still holding the record. It is also the benchmark every fastest fighter jet is measured against.
Its evasive maneuver was to speed up
When a surface-to-air missile was fired at an SR-71, the standard response was to accelerate and climb. In 24 years of operations, no Blackbird was ever lost to enemy fire. It simply flew faster than anything sent after it.
5. Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25 Foxbat: the fastest production jet


The MiG-25 is the fastest production military aircraft ever fielded. It can reach Mach 3.2, about 2,190 mph (3,524 km/h), though pilots are restricted to roughly Mach 2.83 because sustained top speed damages the engines.
Built as a high-altitude interceptor, the Foxbat traded agility for raw speed and climb. Unlike the experimental aircraft above it, hundreds were built and some still fly, which makes it the fastest genuinely operational fixed-wing aircraft on this list alongside its successor.
It scared NATO into building the F-15
When the MiG-25 first appeared, Western analysts assumed its speed meant it was a world-beating dogfighter, and the fear helped drive the F-15 program. Then a Soviet pilot defected with one in 1976, and inspection revealed a heavy, single-purpose interceptor far less capable than feared.
6. Bell X-2 Starbuster: the aircraft that found the thermal wall



The Bell X-2 was a 1950s rocket research aircraft built to explore flight beyond Mach 3. On September 27, 1956, it reached Mach 3.2, about 2,094 mph (3,370 km/h).
That flight also exposed how dangerous the region was. The aircraft went out of control moments after setting the record and was lost with its pilot, and the data it returned shaped every fast aircraft designed afterward.
7. North American XB-70 Valkyrie: the Mach 3 bomber



The XB-70 Valkyrie was a six-engine strategic bomber prototype designed to cruise at Mach 3, around 2,020 mph (3,250 km/h), at very high altitude. Only two were built.
It is the fastest large aircraft ever flown, dwarfing everything else near its speed. Surface-to-air missiles made high-altitude bombing obsolete before it could enter service, so the Valkyrie became a research aircraft instead.
8. Mikoyan MiG-31 Foxhound: the fastest aircraft in service today


With every experimental and Blackbird-era record holder retired, the MiG-31 Foxhound is the fastest aircraft still in frontline service. It cruises at Mach 2.83 and can dash to Mach 3.2, roughly 1,860 mph (2,993 km/h), though the airframe limits how long it holds that speed.

The SR-71 is not the fastest aircraft ever
You will see the Blackbird called the fastest aircraft in the world constantly. It is not. It is the fastest air-breathing jet ever flown, which is a real and impressive record. But the crewed X-15 flew at more than twice its speed, and the unmanned X-43A flew nearly three times faster. The SR-71 is the fastest jet, not the fastest aircraft.
