Pick Delta Gold Medallion if you check two bags, change flights on the day, fly SkyTeam partners abroad or want a real shot at upgrades. Stay at Silver Medallion if you fly mostly domestic with a carry-on and spend well under $10,000 a year on Delta.
The decisive numbers: Gold costs $10,000 in Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs) against Silver’s $5,000, and it pays back in fees. A Gold member checking two bags on a round trip with one same-day change saves $185 that a Silver member pays.
This comparison uses Delta’s own Medallion benefit tables, bag allowance, fee chart and upgrade rules, opened in October 2026. For how Delta stacks up against its rivals as a whole, see Delta vs United vs American.

How we compared
Every benefit comes from Delta’s own pages, opened October 24, 2026, and applies to Delta-operated flights on a Classic or Extra ticket. The $185 figure assumes a round trip within the U.S. with two checked bags each way and one Same-Day Confirmed change: Gold avoids the $55 second-bag fee twice ($110) and the $75 change fee. The miles figure multiplies $10,000 of eligible Delta spend by 8 miles per dollar for Gold and 7 for Silver. The card figures divide the MQDs still needed after the $2,500 MQD Headstart by Delta’s published Boost rates of 1 MQD per $20 or per $10. We list card rules as facts, not as a recommendation.
Upgrades
Both tiers get unlimited complimentary upgrades to Delta First, Delta Comfort (the old Comfort+), domestic Delta Premium Select and domestic Delta One, for themselves and a companion on the same reservation, on Classic and Extra tickets. The difference is when your name goes on the list.

Silver upgrades to First and Comfort begin 24 hours before departure. Gold upgrades begin 72 hours out, a window three times as long, and Delta says tier is the most important factor in who clears first: Diamond, then Platinum, then Gold, then Silver.
Within a tier, Delta breaks ties by Million Miler status, Reserve card membership, corporate tickets and the MQDs earned that year, in steps of 100. How many First seats there are to give away depends on the aircraft, which varies widely across Delta’s fleet.
Domestic Delta One upgrades start on the day of departure for every tier, so Silver and Gold enter at the same time. Gold still clears ahead of Silver on that list.
Edge: Gold. A 72-hour window and higher tier priority beat Silver’s 24 hours on every upgradeable cabin.
Checked bags and same-day changes
Within the U.S. and Canada, Silver gets one free checked bag of up to 70 lb (32 kg) and Gold gets two. Delta charges $55 each way for a second standard bag, so Gold’s second bag is worth $110 on a round trip.
The free bags extend to up to eight companions on a Delta-operated flight. Delta also gives Silver members a second free bag within the U.S. and Canada if they hold an eligible Delta SkyMiles American Express card.
Same-Day Confirmed lets you switch to another flight on your travel day when your fare class is open. On a Classic ticket it costs $75 for Silver and is free for Gold, and the same split applies to Same-Day Standby.
Silver can still change for free on an Extra or refundable ticket, because those fares waive the fee for everyone. Delta Basic tickets get no same-day changes at any tier.
Edge: Gold. One extra free bag and a waived $75 change fee are the clearest dollar gap between the tiers.
Delta's own pages disagree on Silver
Delta’s Silver Medallion page says Same-Day Confirmed fees are waived for Silver members. Delta’s fee chart, its same-day flight change page and its baggage page all say $75 per ticket for Silver on a Classic fare, free only with Extra or refundable tickets or Gold status and above. We went with the three pages that agree, as of October 2026.
At the airport: check-in, security and boarding
Gold is the first tier with Sky Priority. That means the priority check-in lanes, the frequent traveler security lines at select U.S. airports and the Sky Priority boarding lane.

Gold boards in Zone 4, with Platinum members and SkyTeam Elite Plus customers. Silver boards in Zone 5 through the general boarding lane, still ahead of most Delta Main passengers but behind Delta Comfort in Zone 3.
Both tiers get $40 off a CLEAR+ membership, which Delta prices at $169 a year for Medallions against a standard $209. If you are weighing that against PreCheck, our TSA PreCheck vs CLEAR breakdown covers both.
Edge: Gold. Sky Priority lanes and an earlier boarding zone are Gold-only.
Earning miles
A general SkyMiles member earns 5 miles per dollar on Delta flights. Silver earns 7 and Gold earns 8, counted on the base fare and carrier surcharges but not government taxes.
On $10,000 of eligible Delta spend, the Gold threshold, that is 80,000 miles for Gold and 70,000 for Silver. What those 10,000 extra miles are worth depends on how you redeem them, which our guide to what airline miles are worth works through.
Hertz rentals booked through Delta earn 5 miles per dollar for Silver and 6 for Gold, and both tiers get Hertz Five Star status.
Edge: Gold. One extra mile per dollar is a small gap, but it compounds on every ticket.
Qualifying: how hard each tier is
Since 2024, Delta status depends on one number: MQDs. Silver needs $5,000 and Gold needs $10,000 earned between January 1 and December 31, 2026, and the status lasts from the day you earn it until January 31, 2028.
You earn $1 MQD per dollar spent on Delta-marketed flights, excluding taxes and Delta Main Basic fares, plus $1 per dollar on Delta Vacations packages. Award tickets on partner airlines earn 1 MQD per 100 miles redeemed, and the balance resets to zero every January.
Delta SkyMiles Platinum and Reserve American Express cardholders get a $2,500 MQD Headstart each year, then 1 MQD per $20 or per $10 of card spend. On card spend alone, that is $50,000 or $25,000 for Silver and $150,000 or $75,000 for Gold.
The thresholds are holding still. A Delta spokesperson confirmed to The Points Guy in October 2026 that the same $5,000 and $10,000 will apply to 2027 activity, the third straight year without an increase.
Edge: Silver. It takes half the spend, and for an occasional flyer it is the only tier within reach.
Flying abroad: SkyTeam status and lounges
Silver carries SkyTeam Elite status. Gold carries SkyTeam Elite Plus, the alliance’s top tier, the same one Platinum and Diamond members get.

Elite Plus is what opens partner lounges. Gold members flying any cabin on a same-day international SkyTeam flight operated by a partner, not by Delta, can use SkyTeam lounges with a guest; Silver gets none.
Gold also brings priority baggage handling as an Elite Plus member. On international trips in Delta Main or Delta Comfort, both tiers can check one extra bag of up to 50 lb (23 kg) over the standard allowance.
Edge: Gold. Partner lounge access is the biggest Gold perk for anyone who flies Air France, KLM or Korean Air.
Myth: Gold Medallion gets you into the Sky Club
It does not. Neither Silver nor Gold includes Delta Sky Club membership. Gold’s only club link is for travel abroad: SkyTeam lounges on partner-operated international flights, and the Sky Club only when flying internationally in Delta Premium Select or Delta One. A domestic Main ticket at Gold gets you the Sky Priority lane, not the lounge.
The smaller perks
Both tiers get free Preferred seats, personalized bag tags and Reclaim My Status, which restores a lapsed tier for three months while you earn it back. Neither gets Choice Benefits, which start at Platinum.
Gold adds four onboard drink vouchers a year and a higher place on the Medallion phone line: Delta ranks Silver as “Priority” and Gold as “High Priority”. That matters most on a day of mass cancellations.
Edge: Gold. The drink vouchers and the phone line are minor, but both go one way.
Is Gold worth the extra $5,000? The break-even math
Status is not something you buy outright, so the real question is what the extra $5,000 of Delta spend returns. Take an example traveler whose round trips average $500 before taxes: Silver takes 10 of them a year, and Gold takes 20.
If that traveler checks two bags each way on all 20 trips, Gold waives the $55 second-bag fee 40 times. That is $2,200 a year that a Silver member without an eligible Delta card would pay.
Add four Same-Day Confirmed changes on Classic tickets and Gold saves another $300. The extra mile per dollar adds 10,000 miles on the $10,000 spent.
For a carry-on traveler who never changes flights, the hard-dollar gap shrinks to the miles and four drink vouchers. What is left is time: earlier upgrades, shorter lines and an earlier boarding zone, which only you can price.
One more test: a Silver member who already holds an eligible Delta SkyMiles Amex card gets the second free bag within the U.S. and Canada anyway. For that traveler, Gold’s bag advantage disappears on domestic trips.
Edge: Gold. It pays back for anyone who checks two bags or changes flights, and only for them.
Who should pick which
| If you… | Aim for | Because |
|---|---|---|
| Fly Delta a few times a year, domestic, carry-on only | Silver | One free bag and Zone 5 boarding cover you, at half the spend |
| Check two bags on most trips | Gold | The second bag is $110 per round trip without it |
| Often switch flights on the day | Gold, or buy Extra fares | Silver pays $75 on a Classic ticket |
| Want upgrades to Delta First | Gold | 72-hour window and priority over every Silver |
| Fly SkyTeam partners abroad | Gold | Elite Plus opens partner lounges; Silver’s Elite does not |
| Sit near $10,000 in MQDs in late 2026 | Gold, only with trips you would take anyway | MQDs reset on January 1 and do not roll over |
Silver is a good tier for a light traveler, and Gold is where the status starts to pay back in fees and time. Spend the extra $5,000 only if it is spend you already have, because MQDs reset every January 1.
Miles you earn on the way follow different rules from MQDs, which our guide to whether airline miles expire explains.
