Antonov An-225 Mriya

The six-engine heavy transport built to carry the largest payloads ever flown.

Overview

Antonov Ukraine ICAO: A225 1988–Present $250 million (2016)

The Antonov An-225 Mriya was the heaviest aircraft ever to enter operational service. Developed in the Soviet Union to transport oversized cargo and space program components, it became an aviation icon. Only one completed example flew commercially.

Operational Context

Antonov An-225 Mriya — six-engine strategic heavy transport

The An-225 first flew in 1988 as an enlarged development of the An-124. It was originally designed to carry the Buran space shuttle and other oversized loads. The aircraft features six turbofan engines, a massive wing, and a twin-tail configuration.

Powered by six Progress D-18T turbofan engines producing approximately 51,600 pounds of thrust (229 kN) each, the An-225 cruised at around 430 knots (800 km/h). Maximum takeoff weight exceeded 1.4 million pounds (640,000 kg). The cargo hold and external mounting points enabled transport of exceptional loads.

The An-225 later entered commercial service for heavy cargo missions worldwide. It became a symbol of Ukrainian aerospace engineering. The sole completed aircraft was destroyed in 2022, marking the end of an extraordinary aviation chapter.
