Discover Airlines said on October 29, 2026, that its first Airbus A350-900 is planned to join the fleet in June 2027, and will likely fly from Frankfurt to Calgary or Orlando. A second jet follows in December 2027 and takes the Lufthansa Group leisure carrier to San José, Costa Rica, and on to Belize City, a new destination for the airline.

The announcement came in the same week Discover retired its last A330-200, a jet about 22 years old. That leaves 15 A330-300s flying its long-haul network today.

Discover Airlines’ plan as of October 29, 2026. The 2029 start for the last nine jets is from FlightGlobal.

The first jet will not go straight onto long-haul flying. Discover says it will spend its first few weeks on a high-frequency short-haul route for training, though the airline’s release does not name that route.

Short sectors give crews more takeoffs and landings on a new type than an overnight long-haul rotation does. Discover says Calgary and Orlando then suit the jet’s introduction because, with up to daily flights, they keep operations stable with little added complexity.

The pairing has shifted in a year. When Discover first announced the A350 in October 2025, it pointed to Windhoek and Orlando as possible early routes.

Still a plan

Discover presents these dates as its current plans and calls the first long-haul route only likely. Treat Calgary and Orlando as the two candidates, not as two confirmed A350 routes.

The Belize City flights are a triangle

From December 14, 2027, Discover takes over Frankfurt to San José from Lufthansa and raises the route from five to six weekly flights. Two of those six continue to Belize City as what the airline calls triangular flights.

Schedule data published by AeroRoutes shows the shape: flight 4Y018 goes from Frankfurt to San José, on to Belize City, then nonstop back to Frankfurt, starting December 16. By great-circle distance, that is about 5,800 miles (9,350 km) out, 590 miles (950 km) to Belize City and 5,600 miles (9,000 km) home.

Discover announced Belize on October 20 as a seasonal service on Thursdays and Sundays through mid-April 2028, with tickets on sale from mid-December 2026. It says it will be the first European airline to serve the country.

Anyone checking schedules now may see a different jet. AeroRoutes and aeroTELEGRAPH both listed the A330-300 on these flights before Discover’s release came out. The airline says the A350 designation will reach its systems over the coming months.

Why a leisure airline wants the A350

Discover’s case is range. It says the A350 can reach holiday destinations its current fleet cannot, naming South and Central America, Southern Africa and Southeast Asia as examples.

Frankfurt to San José is more than 1,000 miles (1,600 km) longer than Frankfurt to Calgary or Orlando, both of which are about 4,700 miles (7,600 km). So the first A350 starts on shorter, established flying before the second one takes the longer route.

The first four jets are coming from inside the group, and Discover says they are still flying for Lufthansa out of Munich, where Lufthansa’s first A350-1000 is due to enter service on December 3. One Mile at a Time reports they are former Philippine Airlines aircraft that Lufthansa acquired in 2021.

Discover expects 20 long-haul aircraft by mid-2028, including those four, and the 16 A330-300s counted in its January cabin announcement would account for the rest. Nine more A350-900s follow and gradually replace the A330-300s, a move the Lufthansa Group listed in its April 2026 strategy update.

What it means for the cabin

The A330-300s are not standing still while they wait to be replaced. Discover’s Ocean Blue cabin gives each one 288 seats, including 30 in a 1-2-1 business class with direct aisle access, with the first converted jet due in April 2027 and all of them by mid-2028.

The first four A350s are a separate case. Aero International reports they will keep their existing cabin rather than receive Ocean Blue, while One Mile at a Time says the interior of the nine later jets is not yet known.
