Operational Context

Mikoyan MiG-29M / M2 — upgraded multirole fighter

The MiG-29M program began in the late 1980s as a comprehensive modernization of the Fulcrum platform. It introduced increased internal fuel capacity, revised aerodynamics, and updated systems. The M2 variant provides a two-seat configuration for training and operational flexibility.

Powered by twin RD-33 series turbofan engines producing around 18,000 to 19,000 pounds of thrust (80 to 84 kN) each with afterburner, the aircraft exceeds Mach 2. Maximum takeoff weight is approximately 50,000 pounds (22,700 kg). It supports a wide range of modern air-to-air and strike munitions.

The MiG-29M and M2 reflect efforts to extend the service life and capability of the Fulcrum family. Improved avionics and structural updates enhance operational effectiveness. The aircraft remains part of Russia’s medium fighter export portfolio.
