Operational Context
Diamond DA-20 — composite light training aircraft
The DA-20 originated from the Austrian-designed HK36 Dimona motor glider, which Diamond Aircraft adapted into a powered light airplane in the early 1990s. The aircraft entered service as a dedicated trainer featuring composite construction and a bubble canopy for improved visibility. Its low-wing configuration and tricycle landing gear provide predictable handling characteristics.
Powered by either Rotax or Continental piston engines depending on variant, typically producing between 100 and 125 horsepower, the DA-20 cruises at around 130 knots (240 km/h). Maximum takeoff weight is approximately 1,760 pounds (800 kg). The aircraft’s lightweight composite airframe contributes to fuel efficiency and low operating costs.
