Will Flight Prices Go Down Closer to Departure Date?

Flying on a plane is not inexpensive, which leads many travelers to shop around for the best deal on flight tickets. Instead of booking early, some travelers wait until closer to the departure date in the hopes of getting a lower price closer to the departure date. Unfortunately, booking late may cost more.

TLDR – Flight prices can change at any time and often increase closer to the travel date. However, experts have found that the least expensive airline fares are typically found about 70 days before the departure date.

When Do Flight Prices Drop?

Airline tickets rarely decrease in price as the departure date approaches. In fact, airline pricing typically increases closer to the departure date.

To fill the most seats, airlines often offer the lowest prices far in advance. As the departure date nears, the prices gradually increase.

Leisure travelers tend to book flights earlier compared to business travelers. To target leisure travelers and fill more seats, airlines offer the lowest prices far in advance.

Airlines also know that business travelers are more likely to pay higher fares, especially when charging the trip to a corporate credit card. As the departure date nears and business travelers begin booking flights, the prices gradually increase.

While the least expensive prices are often available months in advance, airlines may also lower the prices when dealing with lower than expected demand for a flight. If they are struggling to fill seats, the airline may offer tickets at a discount. However, they are still likely to increase the fares for last-minute travelers.

Last-minute bookings are likely to cost the most, as the flight is likely to have fewer available seats. Last-minute travelers also have fewer options, allowing airlines to charge more.

Prices may also drop or increase moderately based on real-time bookings and cancellations. As airlines use computer software to adjust prices, they can respond to customer demand in real-time. Airlines may offer 10 to 15 different prices leading up to the departure date.

How Many Days Before a Flight Is the Best Price?

Every airline has different methods for analyzing and setting prices for flights. The prices can also fluctuate based on demand. However, the least expensive prices are often found about 70 days before the departure date.

Eleven to six months before the departure date, airlines typically maintain relatively high prices. The average cost of airfare is about $50 higher during this period. Airlines still have many months available to fill seats and do not need to offer lower fares.

At about six to four months before the departure date, airlines begin offering discounts and lower airfares to lure more passengers. However, the amount of the discount depends on the demand for seats. If demand is limited, the prices are likely to drop more. If demand remains high, passengers may not receive significant savings.

Several months to several weeks before the departure date is when the best prices tend to appear. At this point, the bookings tend to slow down. If an airline still has many empty seats on a flight, they are more likely to offer a greater discount on the airfare.

At about three weeks before the departure date, many airlines start to increase the cost of travel. This is the period when business travelers tend to start booking flights.

The worst time to book is during the final six days before the flight. Travelers pay an average of $208 more when booking with less than one week to go before the departure date.

Do Flight Prices Go up If You Keep Searching?

There is a common belief that web browser cookies allow flight booking websites to increase prices as users search for flights. The truth is that airlines use computer software to update the prices in real-time based on demand and supply.

As seats fill up, the remaining seats become more expensive. This is reflected instantly in the prices that are advertised on websites.

The prices may also change based on competitor prices, the time of the day, the day of the week, the departure date, scheduling, and many other factors. Constantly updating the price of airfare in real-time can make it appear that the prices are increasing the more that a user searches for tickets.

What Is the Best Day of the Week to Book a Flight?

According to several surveys and reviews, Tuesday is the best day of the week to book a flight. However, travelers may not save a lot of money by booking on a specific day.

The average savings are just a few dollars when booking on Tuesday compared to other days of the workweek. Based on the average airfare across all flights, customers tend to pay about $301 when booking on Tuesdays.

The average cost of a flight booked on Wednesday is $304. The prices gradually increase and peak on Sunday. Sundays typically offer the highest prices, with an average cost of $398 per flight. Based on these estimates, booking on the weekend tends to result in the highest prices while booking on the weekdays provides the greatest savings.

What Is the Least Expensive Month to Fly Internationally?

The least expensive months to fly internationally include January and February. These months are outside of the main travel seasons, which include December and most of the summer.

The prices for flights in March are often higher compared to the flights in January and February, as travelers prepare for spring break or long weekends due to various holidays.

While January and February are the least expensive months to fly, the prices may spike around the middle of February due to Valentine’s Day.

Travelers may also find lower prices in September. Most schools start in September, which limits the number of families planning international trips during this time of the year.

What Months Are the Most Expensive to Fly?

December and the summer months, including June, July, and August, are often the most expensive months to travel. Many families have additional time to travel during the summer and around the winter holidays, which leads to an increase in international flights.
