About the Autel EVO 2

The Autel EVO 2 is the newer of the two models. Released in 2020, this state-of-the-art drone became a quick favorite with its unmatched video resolution and sleek design.

With the EVO 2, the camera made the headlines. The drone’s camera shoots in 6K to 8K, so it has an incredibly sharp image right out of the box, with no editing necessary. The 10-bit camera captures up to 1 billion colors, which gives you ultimate flexibility in post-production.

Most of us produce final products in 4K, so you need to ensure your computer can handle processing 6K-8K. But the benefits of this incredibly high resolution give you more flexibility in post, even when you’re producing it in 4K.

The EVO 2 also uses Sony’s latest CMOS sensor, capturing crystal-clear photography even in low-light settings. The camera has an adjustable aperture from f2.8 to f11 and an ISO up to 12,800. All of these features allow you to capture images and video with incredible sharpness and clarity.

Now let’s look at the drone’s flight specs. The EVO 2’s flight features include:

  • 360 obstacle avoidance with 19 sensors
  • Dynamic Track 2.0 helps the drone identify and track objects seamlessly
  • Up to 5.5 miles of transmission range
  • 45 mph maximum flight speed
  • 39 mph wind resistance
  • 40 minutes maximum flight time

About the DJI Mavic 2 Pro

While the Mavic 2 Pro is the older of the two models, I think it remains overall the best on the market. Released by DJI in August 2018, the Mavic 2 Pro has been around for a while, and yet no other drone quite compares to its perfection in flight.

While the camera resolution is lower than the EVO 2, the Mavic 2 Pro shoots in 4K with an outstanding balance of softness and sharpness. I like the cooler temperature of the Mavic 2 Pro, and I find I do less work in post with the way this camera shoots.

DJI partnered with Swedish manufacturer Hasselblad to design the camera on the Mavic 2 Pro, resulting in the L1D-20c camera with Hasselblad’s Natural Colour Solution Technology. The max ISO is 12,800, allowing for excellent performance in low-light settings.

But the best part about the Mavic 2 Pro, and all of DJI’s products, is the incredibly seamless flight performance. The Mavic 2 Pro flies smoother than any other drone and responds to the remote control with great sensitivity. It’s super easy to fly and looks perfect.

The Mavic 2 Pro also has multiple automatic settings like hyper-lapse, hyperlight, enhanced HDR, and 24-48mm optical zoom.

How are the Autel EVO 2 and the Mavic 2 Pro Different?

While the EVO2 and Mavic 2 Pro have a lot of similarities, and both are excellent drones, there are a few key differences in the following areas:

  • Size
  • Video quality
  • Flight performance

The first is that the EVO 2 is significantly larger, and the size gives the drone more space for its 19 sensors and a larger battery. The EVO 2 can fly for up to 40 minutes, compared to the Mavic Pro 2, which has a max flight time of 31 minutes.

However, if you travel a lot and care about portability, the Mavic has all the bells and whistles you need while being more compact and easier to transport. With the EVO2, I couldn’t find a super-compact case and had to travel with the large case it came in.

As we discussed, the EVO 2 shoots in higher resolution, up to 6 or 8K, and the Mavic 2 Pro shoots in the standard 4K. However, the higher resolution isn’t a dealbreaker for many of us since most of us complete post-production at 4K.

If your computer can’t handle 6K, you probably don’t want the EVO 2.

Finally, the Mavic 2 Pro is smoother in flight. Once you have that thing up in the air, it will sit as still as a rock. The controls are exact, and it’s easy to fly, change direction, and more, without any jerkiness or disruption to your video feed.

Mavic also has monthly firmware updates that improve flight performance.

How are the Autel EVO 2 and the Mavic 2 Pro Similar?

The Mavic 2 Pro was the first of its kind when DJI released it in 2018. However, with the release of their EVO 2 in 2020, Autel created a similar product in terms of quality and tech.

The main similarities in the Autel EVO 2 vs. Mavic 2 Pro are:

  • Aperture and ISO
  • Flights speeds of up to 45 miles per hour
  • Transmission ranges of up to 5.5 and 6.2 miles
  • Automated flight modes

Let’s get a little deeper into each of these.

Both drones shoot some of the highest-quality video and photos of anything else on the market.

While the EVO shoots a video resolution of 6K and the Mavic in 4K, both shoot at 30 frames per second and result in gorgeous clarity in post. They have the same aperture and ISO capacity.

Both have long flight times, though the EVO is longer, and both have a maximum speed of right around 45 miles per hour. Thus, both drones can film for about as long as you need them to and quickly cover a ton of ground. They have similar transmission ranges of around six miles.

Both the EVO and Mavic Pro have great automated flight modes to help you capture video right the first time for editing and post-production. Mavic’s product does have a slight advantage in automatic functions like quick shots.

Overall, they both deliver high-quality flight performance over long distances and are the best on the market in video quality.

What’s Better About the Autel EVO 2?

As explained above, Autel’s EVO 2 captures rich, perfect visuals. The camera has an incredibly sharp image right out of the box. No other drone on the market can shoot in 6K or 8K, so Autel has leapfrogged over the competition in terms of photo and video quality.

While some creators prefer a softer image for more flexibility in post, if you want less work on clarity, the EVO 2 is excellent. You’ll have the precision you want right from the start.

Since it shoots in 6K, you have more to work with when you downsize to 4K, particularly if you need to zoom or change the frame. I love having that wiggle room in post, and you can more easily get the perfect shot.

The EVO 2 is also a standout in terms of battery life. You can keep it flying for up to 40 minutes, which is about as long as my hands can handle controlling the remote. The battery is twice the size of the Mavic 2 Pro, and you can tell the difference in performance.

The EVO 2 also has more sensors on the drone itself, giving it precision flight control and obstacle avoidance. Autel has released a few updates that have increased the stability of the EVO 2’s flight performance.

Overall, this drone is a technological feat of excellent flight performance, speed, longevity, and next-generation camera specs.

What’s Better About the Mavic 2 Pro?

While the EVO 2 edges out the Mavic 2 Pro in some areas, overall, I find the Mavic 2 Pro to be the superior drone, which is saying something since it’s a few years older than the EVO 2.

DJI Mavic 2 Pro - Drone Quadcopter UAV with Hasselblad Camera 3-Axis Gimbal HDR 4K Video Adjustable Aperture 20MP 1' CMOS Sensor, up to 48mph, Gray

The Mavic 2 Pro is cheaper than the EVO 2, lighter, more portable, and flies a little bit better.

DJI’s flight technology is best in class – no other drone brand can get quite the stability and smoothness of DJI’s drones. The Mavic 2 Pro is the best of their models, with the most precision flight performance on the market.

Whether the drone is tracking movement, zooming, or holding still, it has zero drift and maintains a perfect position. All of its maneuvers – rolls, pitch, yaw, and throttle – deliver utmost control. Mavic also has slightly better automatic flight mode options.

The Mavic 2 Pro is also more portable than the EVO 2, and the design is slightly more compact and fits in a small case. While the compact design means that the battery is smaller, you can still get up to 31 minutes of seamless flight time.

The camera is top-of-the-line from Swedish designer Hasselblad and delivers the best 4K resolution and quality available. Since most of us can only work in 4K, it’s all you really need.

DJI also released monthly updates, which keep the Mavic 2 Pro at the top of the league.

Who should get the Autel EVO 2?

The EVO 2 from Autel is better for commercial or industrial use cases. If you have a ton of equipment and ways to transport that equipment, you won’t even notice the larger size. Autel’s EVO 2 comes with several accessories and support devices and can last longer than any other drone in flight.

Since the EVO 2 is a bit larger than the Mavic, it’s ideal for anyone transporting a good deal of equipment, rather than individuals who need to travel light.

If you’re a professional using drone video or shots in your work, consider the EVO 2. The incredibly high-resolution imaging and long battery life will make your job a whole lot easier.

The drone’s 19 sensors are excellent for safety considerations, and the automatic tracking system keeps videos smooth and targeted. With a transfer range of over 5 miles, you can fly this thing farther than you’ll ever actually need to.

I highly recommend the Autel EVO 2 for anyone using drones professionally or for industrial use.

Who should get the Mavic 2 Pro?

The Mavic 2 Pro is also fantastic for commercial or industrial use, but it’s particularly ideal for individual or travel use cases. If you are a drone junkie, outdoors person, athlete, influencer, etc., the Mavic 2 Pro is the perfect drone.

The compact size and easy portability make this drone ideal for personal use and taking on hikes, races, travel, and more. Because the drone maximizes the smoothest flying experience, you’ll get perfect video every time.

The Mavic 2 Pro is also ready to go right out of the box. If you’re newer to drones, you’ll be able to get going quickly and have seamless, professional-grade video and photography right away. DJI also offers excellent support and regular updates, so you’re never left in the dark about your drone.

If you’re an individual user who is active and on the go, I highly recommend going with the Mavic 2 Pro. The drone has been the best on the market for over three years running.
